I just got back from my business retreat and it really was a treat! I share with you some of my insight from the experience that I know will really benefit your business.

Owners of a direct care practice are more likely to experience higher job satisfaction than the insurance based practice. And it's no wonder why direct care is independent of insurance. Patients pay the doctor directly for their expertise, the doctor gets full autonomy in how they care for patients and how they get paid. They have chosen this path with a love of medicine. This is the direct care way.

Dr. T  0:24
By listening to this podcast, you may even start to believe that you too can have a successful direct care practice. Come listen with an open mind as I share my personal journey, and how I pivoted from an insurance based practice to direct care right in the middle of the pandemic. And the valuable lessons along the way. This podcast may be the very thing you need to revitalize your medical practice. I'm your host, owner of a direct care podiatry practice Dr. Tea Nguyen.

Dr. T  0:53
Hey there, welcome to another episode I just got back from my business retreat. And I want to share some of those gems with you. Because it relates to just business ownership. Now, whether you are just starting to think about having your direct care practice, or you want to scale up your business into the six, seven figure range, I want you to lean in, because all business practices have the same foundation, it all comes from the same mentality. And that's what I want to share with you today. Having a direct care practice is not just about making the transaction for your services and getting paid for it is so much deeper than that. Those of us who chose to do something radically different against the traditions of medicine, really have a deeper purpose of creating a life that is meant for us, we are allowed to dream big without restrictions.

Dr. T  1:45
And we are allowed to achieve those successes as we define them. Now I've spoken to a lot of people who struggle with the idea of success. And it pains me to see people who are at the top of their game still feel like they've never reached success. How sad is it that you are the less than 1% of the population, creating your life, making the money, but you don't feel success. And a lot of that has a lot to do with your mindset about your own beliefs and how you define success. Or maybe it's how you're accepting other people's definition of success. And I would hate for you to never really enjoy the things that you've invested the time you put in to create your life and not actually enjoy it for what it is.

Dr. T  2:38
And so in business, it's really all about the mindset, you're going to hear this over and over again, no matter what book you pick up. And no matter what podcasts you listen to, we all talk about the same thing, which is your mindset really matters, how you believe is how you're going to show up, and it's going to produce results. So the life that you have right now is the accumulation of beliefs that you have. Isn't that something, just think about it? The light that you have right now is the accumulation of beliefs that you have, which led you to this current life you have. And when you recognize that to be true, how much? How different can we actually show up if we actually believed in ourselves, believed in a different future that we can actually have a business that we love, and enjoy and are proud of.

Dr. T  3:30
That's why the mindset is so important. Now, I'm not the first one to talk about mindset. This is all common knowledge in the business world. But this is the first time me understanding what it's like to be a business owner. I ran my business for about four years, I've had lots of ups, I've had some really bad downs recently. And so this retreat was just the thing that I needed to put me in the right mindset. And I want to share that with you too. So I listen to Terry Seville voice speak on behaviors that successful people have and share. And there are five things that all successful people do every single day. Now if you haven't heard of Terry Seville foie, she is a faith based motivational speaker, and I'm the last person to be listening to any faith based anything. I have no association with religion.

Dr. T  4:19
I'm not disrespectful about it. I just don't have an inclination towards it. I am a spiritual believer and I do believe that we haven't hired entity and sometimes at higher entity could be coming from within our own mind. So let's pull away apart the valuable lessons she has to share and what all successful people do in their daily practices. And maybe we can also reach to our own new heights as well. You ready top five things she shared with us and that I'm sharing with you and of course my interpretations along the way. So number one, making time for yourself. I call this alone time. I love alone time. I am an expert introvert So I actually recharge when I'm by myself when I'm thinking when I'm writing. And she said a similar thing, everybody, their number one habit is they either pray to their gods or they meditate.

Dr. T  5:13
And I interpret that as alone time just to quiet in your mind by yourself focused in what your brain is trying to tell you. And if you listen, close enough, you're going to hear how you're supposed to do things to get there. Yeah, you have the solutions to all of your problems, if you just took a moment to listen to that inner voice. I know it sounds kind of crazy. But when was the last time you took a moment to listen to what your deepest desires were, and then acted on it? And then you made it come true. Just think about it. If you were to do these exercises more intentionally, how quicker can you get to your goals, and this is what all successful people do.

Dr. T  5:53
Number one, they have alone time, whether that's praying, meditating, writing, digital meditating, is not just the act of trying to quiet your brain. But it's actually the singular focus of just doing the one thing. So maybe that could be writing for some people. Maybe it's doing movement, meditation, like yoga, and it could just be listening to music. These are ways where we can focus our mind on the one thing because a lot of us most of us have brain chatter in our brain chatter is constantly pulling us back and forth, we're distracted, our attention span gets more and more narrow as the years go on. And to make this a daily habit of focusing on one thing to quiet your mind and to listen to what your mind has to share, you're gonna get all the answers that you need. So number one is alone time. I'm a huge fan of alone time, I seem to never get enough of it. All right.

Dr. T  6:50
Number two, all successful people read, they read out of curiosity, they read to obtain new knowledge. It's an intellectual activity. Because as Dr. Seuss says, the more you read, the more you know, the more places you will go, some version of that reading opens the doors to your imagination to what is possible and to what already exists. And so why not learn from other people ahead of you who have valuable things to share. And there's data about this to the data is 88% of wealthy people. 88% of wealthy people make it a habit to read every single day, versus 2% of poor people make it a habit to read every day. Think about that 88% of wealthy people make it a habit to read every day, whereas only 2% of poor people make it a habit to read every day. So that speaks volume reading gives you access, it helps your creative problem solving, it gives you the tools to have the imagination to think bigger, and to understand the world a little bit differently, too. So reading number two, you should be reading, whether it's every day, or make a goal or reading a new book every month, whatever it is, start with what you have. And just add to it don't feel intimidated that you have to read 12 books in a month or something like that. I started with audiobooks and did one book per month. And you can start with that too. It's easy, it's passive, you're gonna still gain huge benefits by reading more books.

Dr. T  8:18
Number three, listen to motivational messages every day. For some of you, it might be a religious base book, or audiobook or a podcast or going to church. For others, it might be a podcast, that is not religious based, just motivational. And why that is so important, is because the thoughts that you keep in your mind is going to be what produces your results. So if your thoughts that you have in your mind are constantly negative, then you're going to have a really negative experience in your day to day life. And like I said earlier, some people are successful in my eyes, but they themselves don't feel that success because their mind is tricking them in believing that they're not good enough. And if you know me by now, you know that I will not stand for that you are good enough to have success. You are good enough to dream, whatever it is you want and to actually have it. But you have to make it a daily practice to think positively and have those motivational messages in your mind every single day, every single day until you believe it to be true. That's what successful people do.

Dr. T  9:28
Now, number four. So all this is fun and games, right? We have a long time to think and process our deepest desires. We have time to read or listen to an audio book. We are listening to motivational messages. But what is all that if we don't take action? So number four is actually taking the action. So maybe you've heard of people talk about oh, just think positively and your world is going to change. Right? It doesn't happen that way. You actually have to take the steps to get there and How do you actually get there is having the belief that either it is possible or you're going to make it happen, right? So you internally, this is an inside job happiness is an inside job, you have to look within yourself and decide for yourself, if you're going to create your success, and how does that actually look like now that you visualize what that could look like, then you start taking down the action. So in my practices, when I'm helping coaching clients to create their direct care practice, I do a very simple exercise that makes an idea become actionable. And oftentimes, in indirect care practice, people are wondering how do I move the income compared to when I was in the insurance based practice, it all comes down to being a math problem. And how you go from six figures into making it a daily practice in getting the six figures getting your goals is math. So you take the math problem, you take it, the number that you want to make in your revenue, and then you start breaking up that revenue into different ways to make that. So let's say you want to make half a million dollars of revenue, break it down? How many people do you want to see how many people should you be charging, and then the different formulas for that, so you can see one person for half a million, or you can see half a million people for $1. Right? This is a math problem, you break it up so that it looks more and more tangible. And that is what taking action is we're taking this big goal and creating these small little steps so that they're more digestible, so that we can actually feel motivated to take those actions.

Dr. T  11:37
So number four, all this is fun and games that you have to take action. And then number five, I know some of you are going to maybe wiggle a little bit when I share number five.

Dr. T  11:47
But number five is so important. You ready for it. It's exercise. Yeah. Exercise. So if you already exercise great high five, for the rest of us who have 1,000,001 excuses to not exercise. We don't have time, we're tired. It's not fun. All the things, right? Yeah, I'm talking to you. And I'm talking to me too. But all successful people incorporate exercise into their daily practice. Why? Because your body is a reflection of your mind. When you exercise, you actually increase blood flow to your brain, it keeps your brain healthy. When you increase circulation in your mind, you can actually replace old thoughts that don't serve you with new thoughts. That's kind of the way I see it. But there's that there's also a physiological benefit of exercising, you increase your blood circulation, you increase your oxygenation, it powers your energy level, surprisingly, or not. So give it a go.

Dr. T  12:39
Next time you feel exhausted or tired, go for a 30 minute brisk walk and see how you feel at the end of that walk, you're going to be super surprised that you actually have a dose of jolt and energy after that exercise. And then when you start incorporating small activities like that into your day, you're going to start seeing that your mind just functions a little bit differently, a lot more productive, and you're able to process stress better, and you're able to sleep better as well. So those are the five important daily habits that Terry had shared with us in the business retreat, I thought was really worth sharing with you. Because we forget, at the end of the day, our private practices, whether it's insurance, space, or cash, it's still a business entity, we still need to have an energy to run it. And we still need to function at the capacity at our full capacity to do it. So these are the five daily habits successful people do. And if you don't already do them, they'll start adding to them. If you already do them, add more to them.

Dr. T  13:39
But the idea is just to start there, and to make it a daily discipline to incorporate into your daily exercises. So to summarize, number one alone time, make a habit of having alone time, maybe journal your thoughts number two, read a whole bunch read different books, it doesn't have to be anatomy books, it doesn't have to be scientific articles, it can just be general reading about the world, something that builds on your your intellect and your business, intellect, personal development, intellect. Number three, listen to motivational messages, because positive messages do matter. Because what you believe is how you end up showing up. Number four, make sure you take some action every single day small actions is great. Don't push yourself, you know what I mean? Don't lift up 100 pound dumbbell when you're really only at the 10 pound capacity, build up to it, but take some action.

Dr. T  14:29
And then number five, incorporate exercise or increase the amount of exercises you're doing. Your body is going to really appreciate you for that. That's all I've got for today's episode. I hope you're motivated to do something each and every single day that leads you closer to your dream practice. I'll catch you next week. Take care.
